One important step is identifying your own strengths and weaknesses.

Treehouse's Nick Pettit faced his own challenge of weighing

his various skills and passions, and he used one particular activity

to help him discover ideas on the direction he ended up considering.

When Nick was considering potential career choices,

he grouped his interests within a Venn diagram

in an effort to find some overlap.

First he considered the things he liked doing.

Activities like web design, education, playing video games,

filmmaking, and watching TV all made the list.

Next he considered activities he was good at.

Again web design, education, and playing video games made the list,

but he also added computer repair and paying bills.

Finally he thought about activities that people have a need for.

There is certainly a demand for web design and education

as well as computer repair,

but there's also a demand for things like food and health care.

When Nick considered how the three sets of activities align,

it was easy to see that some activities fell into more than one circle.

These represent potential opportunities,

but only two activities were in all three areas: Web design and education.

a possible direction for his career became clear.

So not everyone can simply jump into their dream job.
