[Illustration: Illustrator Techniques]
0:02
[Mat Helme] We just took the photo of our sketch
0:04
of the walrus with our iPhone and emailed it to ourselves,
0:07
so now it's time to open it up in Illustrator.
0:10
We have Illustrator open right here,
0:13
and we want to click on File, Open,
0:15
and pull in that image.
0:18
Zoom out just a bit, grab the image and rotate it
0:21
so it's upright.
0:25
And we will shrink it down just a bit.
0:28
And as you can see, we have it on layer 1 here.
0:35
What we're going to do is as the layer 1 is selected,
0:38
click this tab, and we want to make it a template.
0:43
We select "Template."
0:51
As you can see, the opacity drops just a bit, and it locks it up.
0:53
And we're going to be using this as a reference,
0:56
so what we're going to do is create another layer,
0:59
and now we're ready to go over some of the styles of
1:02
illustration that we can do.
1:06
I'm going to cover 3 styles.
1:08
One is going to be the Sharpie style with a tablet.
1:10
I'm using a Wacom Intuos4.
1:12
The next is going to be a precise pen technique,
1:15
and the third is going to be a stencil style.
1:18
Let's start off with the Sharpie style with a tablet.
1:20
First what we're going to want to do is create our own brush,
1:24
and to do that, we go up to the top here.
1:28
Select "New brush."
1:35
We're going to want to do a calligraphy brush.
1:37
Select "OK."
1:39
Then all the way at the bottom here, the diameter,
1:41
we want to take that 9 and make it a 5.
1:43
And select "Pressure."
1:48
Go to "Variation."
1:51
Make that a 5. Select "OK."
1:54
Now we have our new brush.
1:57
Now, we're not going to actually use the brush tool.
2:00
We're going to use the blob brush.
2:02
The blob brush is located directly below the pencil brush, or the pencil.
2:04
Select the blob brush. It's also Shift B.
2:09
We'll go ahead and test it out.
2:13
We have white selected, so let's select a dark color like black.
2:15
Start using it here just to get the hang of it.
2:22
Now, as you'll notice, the harder you press down with the tablet,
2:25
the wider the brush gets and vice versa.
2:29
The lighter you press, the lighter the line will get.
2:33
Like so.
2:37
We'll just go ahead and do the hair here.
2:41
As you can see, the tip here is a little bit lighter
2:44
than the base, so we're going to want to start off heavy,
2:47
so press down hard.
2:50
And then let up just a little bit.
2:53
If you want, you can change the diameter of the brush
2:58
to be either less or greater than 5
3:01
by just selecting the brush.
3:04
If you want to do 9, it will just have a different pressure variation.
3:07
You can see it gets a lot thicker there.
3:17
That's one style we can use.
3:19
Let's go ahead and lock out that layer
3:23
and make it not viewable.
3:26
We'll create a new layer on top of that.
3:28
This technique is the precise pen technique.
3:31
We're going to want to select our pen tool
3:36
by pressing P, or it's right over here above the text tool.
3:39
Now, I'm assuming that you already know how to use the pen tool while doing this.
3:45
Let's go ahead and create an arc.
3:49
And as you can see, we have a straight line here.
3:55
Now, if we want to make the middle of the line a little bit fatter,
3:58
what we want to do is get the width tool
4:02
by either pressing Shift W or selecting it in the toolbar over here.
4:05
And if you grab the middle of the line
4:16
and pull up, you can see it gets a little bit thicker.
4:20
Now, this takes a little bit longer than using the tablet,
4:27
but you get a nice, clean, finished look.
4:30
Let me just test it out here.
4:36
I'm going to want to make this base a little bit fatter, so Shift W,
4:38
grab the width tool, pull it out,
4:41
and there you go.
4:46
That's what I like to call the precise pen technique.
4:49
Now, the last technique is the stencil style.
4:53
To do this, we're basically going to outline everything,
4:57
so let's go ahead and lock out the layer that we just created,
5:00
make it not viewable, create a new layer, and grab the pen tool again,
5:04
press P, and what we're basically going to do is outline
5:09
all of the dark lines
5:14
like you see here.
5:26
Now, right now I have the outline
5:32
with the color where I want the fill.
5:41
I don't want the stroke.
5:43
I want to get rid of the stroke and use black for the fill.
5:45
And then what you can do is press A
5:51
and get the select tool, and you can grab the points
5:53
and adjust them as you want, just like that.
5:56
With this technique, what you want to do
6:03
is go ahead and make a fill on all of the dark
6:06
so you get almost like an ink outline.
6:12
And then do the complete shape,
6:15
so you would trace around the whole shape
6:17
with the solid color so then you'd have a base color
6:20
and then the ink lines over top of that, and you get a stencil effect.
6:23
For this project, since it's a kid's project,
6:30
I would probably use the Sharpie style with a tablet
6:33
to get more of a sketched look.
6:36
So, we're going to go with that style.
