It's important for
us to have a common definition so
0:00
we're on the same page, language matters.
0:03
Gender is how someone identifies,
it is fluid.
0:07
This means that gender isn't restricted
to the gender binary which is male and
0:11
female.
0:16
There are many genders it's all in how the
person identifies and that's up to them.
0:16
Gender is different from sexuality, which
we will discuss later on in the seminar.
0:22
Let's review some of
the many gender identities.
0:29
Cisgender also known as cis is
someone whose identity matches with
0:32
their biological sex.
0:37
For instance,
I identify as a cisgender female.
0:39
When we talk about male and
female, we're talking about sex.
0:44
Sex is biological and assigned at birth.
0:48
Sex can also include intersex.
0:51
Intersex is when a person is
born with reproductive or
0:54
sexual anatomy that doesn't fit
the boxes of male or female.
0:58
Someone who identifies as transgender
means that their personal identity and
1:02
gender do not correspond
with their birth sex.
1:09
I wanna point out that someone
who is trans may not have had
1:12
transition surgery or want any.
1:17
They may have had some surgery and
hormone replacement or
1:19
they may have fully transitioned.
1:24
Someone who identifies as genderqueer
is someone who does not subscribe
1:26
to gender distinctions, but
identifies with neither both or
1:31
a combination of male and female genders.
1:35
Whereas someone who is gender fluid
identifies as not having a fixed gender.
1:38
Non-binary is an umbrella term for
1:44
someone whose identity is neither
entirely male or entirely female.
1:47
Gender non-conforming, or gender variance,
is a gender expression by
1:53
someone who doesn't match masculine or
feminine gender norms.
1:57
Two-spirit is a gender
identity I recently learned.
2:02
Two-spirit refers to someone who
identifies as having both a masculine and
2:05
a feminine spirit and
is used by some indigenous people to
2:11
describe their sexual,
gender, and spiritual identity.
2:15
There are many genders,
this list is not all inclusive.
2:19
This isn't meant to make you feel like
you need to memorize every single one.
2:23
It is to remind you to be mindful
of each person's gender identity,
2:27
because everyone is different,
so do not assume.
