Project Skeleton

We're going to start fresh with a new project. But instead of starting completely from scratch, we're going to use the project skeleton that Slim provides. This adds a few basic files that will show us some of the conventions for structure and format used with this framework.

Slim Framework 3 Skeleton Application

Use the skeleton application to quickly set up and start working on a new Slim Framework 3 application. This application uses the latest Slim 3 with the PHP-View template renderer. It also uses the Monolog logger.

    Because Slim is a microframework, the skeleton installed is still very small. 0:41
    So it won't take us long to walk through everything it gives us while keeping 0:47
    the magic to a minimum. 0:52
    On the Slim framework's homepage, if we scroll down, 0:53
    we can see that we can create a Slim skeleton project using Composer. 0:57
    Let's go to the terminal window. 1:02
    We want to start in the Documents folder. 1:05
    So I cd ../, to go up one level. 1:08
    From here I type, 1:13
    composer create-project 1:17
    slim/slim-skeleton. 1:22
    And then I type the name I want to use for the project. 1:27
    I'll use mvc-framework. 1:30
    This installed a few more packages than our original install. 1:40
    Well, let's go into Atom and open our project folder. 1:44
    Okay, the first thing we see in our mvc-framework project is a logs folder. 1:56
    We'll get to using that later. 2:02
    The first thing I want to show you is the next folder, this public folder. 2:05
    Most frameworks will put the minimum amount of files within a publicly 2:11
    accessible folder on the server. 2:15
    All other files are store outside this public folder, 2:18
    keeping those files from being accessed directly in a web browser. 2:22
    This folder may be named something else like public_html or www. 2:28
    But the important part is that this is the only publicly accessible folder. 2:34
    Minimum files would be the CSS, images, and 2:39
    any client-side JavaScript required for the site to function properly. 2:43
    You'll also see the .htaccess file, for telling the server where to send requests. 2:50
    The only other files included in this publicly accessible folder 2:56
    are the controller or controllers for an application. 3:01
    It is fairly common practice to have an entire application running through 3:04
    a single front controller. 3:09
    This front controller will handle all requests for a website. 3:11
    We're going to use this public folder for the root of our site. 3:16
    Open MAMP, go to Preferences > Web Server, 3:20
    and choose our mvc-framework public folder. 3:26
    Now we can start the servers. 3:33
    Once the servers are started, we can go to localhost:8888. 3:36
    We can now see our initial website. 3:43
    If I go into MAMP and stop the servers, when I refresh 3:46
    my browser, I can no longer access the local site. 3:51
    Let's restart our server and then check out the rest of the structure of our site. 3:56
