At the WordPress Track they teach you both some simple PHP, jQuery and then you preceed to build your own theme :) So I would definitely advise you to that. And in terms of the freelance blogging I would check out some of the business courses on blogging and maybe the WordPress course "How to Build a WordPress Blog". I don't know your skills of course, but maybe this will help! Kind regards, Chris

I am not sure what you like to achieve through blogging but for more blogging, content and online marketing tips, you can check out Neil Patel blog (Quick Sprout) and Noah Kagan blog (OkDork).
Before you take up Wordpress course in Threehouse, I will suggest you should finish the PHP course first for better understanding and easily to catch up.
Keep it up! Cheers!
