How much money can you make for building a REST API for a company?

It seems unlikely that a company providing (or wanting to provide) these kinds of services would hire an outside contractor to create a single API. And in the event that they were in enough of a bind to consider this, they would almost certainly only consider very experienced developers, for which they might pay $100 — $150 per hour or more.

More likely, this job would be done by someone in a full-time staff developer position with a salary in the $25 — $45 per hour range.

But I'm talking U.S. in both value and opportunies .. elsewhere in the world I have no idea.
