My clients are always wanting customisations made to their site such as layout changes or monthly deals they might have. One thing I have learnt is that it's very rare you will find a plugin that actually supplies you with the functions that you need. My question is what is the best way to speed up theme changes and layout changes? I have coded my own themes for my clients and it seems to be a nightmare going back and making changes to them. Any tips would be awesome thanks :)

10,615 PointsLook into roots.io it's a starter theme that's incredibly easy to build from and make modifications to. I use it for 90% of my WP sites now.

Treehouse Guest TeacherThis is a really open ended question since making layout changes is one thing and could be solved by building on a CSS/JS framework. However, monthly deals or moving around content may involve installing plugins or manually recoding templates.
I think what you really need to focus on educating your client and being able to plan changes and what they are and are not able to realistically change. What and how you charge can also affect this.
In general though if you build with a framework and understand custom queries you should be able to make changes like you're asking pretty quickly.
