Building a Media Website from Scratch

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Treehouse and brand new to its forum. I just had a quick opinion question regarding my goals in the next few months.

I recently agreed to take on a project with a couple friends of mine. They want to create an entertainment website that hosts all of its own videos and content, complete with a rating system, video/still ads and user accounts that link with Facebook, etc.

I've only made a couple simple websites before, so this feels like a daunting task to me and I think I may have oversold my abilities. My current plan is to complete "How To Make a Wordpress Theme" and "How To Build a Wordpress Plugin" and then start on developing the website.

Do you think my plan is at all realistic and achievable, or am I in way over my head?

if you guys want jumpstart right now there lot of great wordpress themes out there like De-Tube (just google it). or if you want to create the way that you want, then you have to start with programming Foundation (only if you dont have experience) and then php and the mySql.

goodluck

Thanks! I'll take a look at different themes, De-Tube looks pretty legit. I might start with something like that and eventually graduate to my own design.

I've sort of set a path to creating my own site in the long-run: • Introduction to Programming • Build a Simple PHP Application • Enhancing a Simple PHP Application • Using PHP with MySQL • How To Build a Wordpress Theme • How To Build a Wordpress Plugin

Do you think that would cover the knowledge of all the functions I would need?

I think it does. you can wait and see what other pro's will say. Dont forget to tag people while you ask questions because people might have been there in same position like you can better assist you. i have been there and still i am.

good luck :)

I think you should continue with the Worpdress track. I've used Wordpress for a lot of websites and can tell you that the possibilities are endless. You can install custom plugins which may help your especially in your project. Good luck!
