The error I receives is "did you call send() on the request object?" As far as I can see, the request object is being sent: request.send();
What's the problem here?
var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
if (request.readyState === 4) {
document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
}
};
request.open("GET", "footer.html");
function sendAJAX() {
request.send();
};

<body>

<h1>AJAX!</h1>
</div>
<div id="footer"></div>
</body>
</html>

should not be inside request.open()
.

11,800 PointsYou nested request.send() in the function sendAJAX(), but you only declared the function, now you just need to call the function to pass the challenge.
sendAJAX();
or you can just call it without declaring a function like this
request.send()
