Can I safely copy the wp-content folder from one WordPres installation to another?

I'm working with a "customized" installation of WordPress. The website as it is was created by a branding agency who told us not update WordPress because doing so would wipe out the changes they made to the underlying core. (!!!)

Well, we're not working with them anymore and I have a local and staging copy of the website to work with. What I'd like to do is start with brand new installation of WordPress and copy the wp-content folder from the old installation to the new one (with a copy of the database of course). Is there anything about this that wouldn't work?

Theoretically, you should be good to go. All of your content (should) live in the database. wp-content/ will house your theme files, plugins, and uploads. The database creates the relationship between your physical files and the content on your site.

Don't be afraid to experiment though! As long as you don't delete your old site until you're 100% confident, you have nothing to lose by trying things out!
