Commercial WordPress Theme Updates

I am building a commercial WP theme and looking at the updates function.

I found this post: Making update notification functionality for my themes which directed me to this tutorial: https://w-shadow.com/blog/2011/06/02/automatic-updates-for-commercial-themes/

It seems to work, but I have a few issues:

  1. My theme screenshot.png image isn't pulling through to the updates page
  2. It's not pulling through the current theme version on the updates page, it say's - "You have version installed. Update to 2.0.0"
  3. It's updating successfully with no errors, but instead of removing the old theme and activating the updated theme, it's leaving the old theme in place and active, and adding the updated theme as a separate inactive theme with a strange theme-name - 'fern-aUvtaR'

Does anyone have any ideas of what's going wrong?

Thank you.

Here is my code:

  • - -This is my .json update file:

{ "version" : "2.1.0", "details_url" : "https://...", "download_url" : "https://.../fern.zip" }

  • - - This is my theme checker function in the themes functions.php file:

require get_template_directory() . '/theme-updates/theme-update-checker.php';

$example_update_checker = new ThemeUpdateChecker( 'Fern', 'https://.../wp-themes/fern/fern-updates.json' );

  • - - And the theme-update-checker.php from the tutorial:
