CSS: background-color working, but not apply to text?

I have a class and i'm trying to apply color to text. It's working for background, but not color property:

style.css
.si {
  color: yellow;
  background-color: #00ae9e;
}

color would typically be applied to a text element contained in the larger element with the background color. is there a p or other text to which color should apply?

I got it! I had to apply specificity -

.si > a {
  color: #00ae9e;
}
