Do I need a ssl certificate when I use Swiftmailer on own hosting?

I'm not quite sure, but does anyone know if I might need a ssl certificate when I use Swiftmailer? My hosting account doesn't have a certificate at the moment, I have to buy one. They say it creates a secure environment for visitors, so it would make sense to me if I need one. I can get Swiftmailer working with Gmail, but not with my own hosting. Then it gives the error message 'something went wrong'. So I figured it might have to do with this certificate?

Not sure on the cert and swiftmail, but you can get cert's for free from places like startssl.com

Thanks for your response. I believe I already got my answer. I live in the Netherlands and we are required to use ssl certificates for user info protection at all times. I guess these rules don't apply to the US :)
