Do I need to know PHP really?

Hi.

I've always liked using Wordpress to build sites, and when I joined Treehouse my plan was to learn how to design templates for it (Mostly Genesis Framework templates if that makes any difference?).

I've completed the build a websites track, and I'm about halfway through Front end Track. My next track will be Wordpress development, but I'm wondering if I can learn about building templates without having to get too indepth with PHP? WHat's the minimum I can get by on when creating WP templates?

I don't really fancy PHP as a language, and have had my head turned by the look of Ruby on Rails since I joined Treehouse so will be learning that as a long term goal.

Thanks

I think the php courses on Treehouse will give you a pretty well rounded view of php without being too heavy on the detail. From what you've written, I understand you've built a couple of websites before in Wordpress. Perhaps it's best to give the php courses a go and see how well they tie in with your current knowledge.

If you're focus is to use Wordpress as a tool then I would head straight over to the Wordpress videos. If you want to better understand how Wordpress works (which can make for faster, and better development decisions!) then I would stick with the php pathway. They've just released a new video called PHP for Wordpress. I haven't watched it myself yet, but it might just be the crash course you're looking for.

Hope this helps!
