Does a period need a backslash inside of square brackets?

His example: 

print(re.findall(r'[-\w\d+.]+@[-\w\d.]+', data))

Shouldn't the periods be escaped like so:

print(re.findall(r'[-\w\d+\.]+@[-\w\d\.]+', data))

When used as part of a character class within brackets, the period loses its special meaning and only represents a period.
