Hi Johnathan, I would look at Learn HTML and CSS followed by Learn WordPress. You don't need Ruby or JS to get started on WordPress - so no need for the extra parts of the Web Design or Web Developer tracks if you are wanting to get onto WordPress quickly.

While you are developing the site you can do this on your computer with a localhost server. This is covered in the WordPress course on the Build a Simple PHP Application stage.

When you are ready to go 'live' for the world to see it you will want to get proper hosting rather than doing that from home. 5quidhost offer a free forever plan (50mb storage + 100mb/month bandwidth limit) which you could use to test on a live server though you'll likely use up the 100mb/month rather quickly. It is also a UK server so you might want one closer to home. Depending where you are perhaps someone can suggest a free/cheap plan for a server near you.

I would do the PHP course prior to WordPress if you really want to master WP. There's a tonne of stuff in the PHP course which is really really relevant to WP, thing like arrays and foreach loops. Plus, WP is built in PHP so understanding the tools you're using to build with is always recommended.

I wouldn't worry too much about distance from server, I host sites in the USA and am UK based, as are my servers. I'm guessing if you want to go over your free plan you can't or they charge you a tonne if it is allowed?

No charges with the 5quidhost free plan - if you go over they would likely turn off the site for the rest of the month and may contact you to suggest moving to a paid plan (which start at £1.75/month for 'unlimited' bandwidth). They have an FAQ about the free plan.
