Its looking for the src aka source of the image.
The image "spain.jpg" is located in a file called images.

5,938 PointsThe source attribute is where the image is stored so that HTML can "pull" it to place onto your website. The Alt is a simple replacement needed in case that main image cannot load for some reason. The alt is not required but it is great to have and google analytics searches to make sure you have it when they score your site.
