how do i access the ftp site for the purposes of making child themes? the wp manual video doesn't show how...

So I'm learning some of the fundamentals of the wp web site, and i know what a child theme and parent theme are, but the directions given on the wp training manual don't say how to access the ftp site that is used for creating the 'child' theme. I want to customize a theme, and so I need to know if I need to use the cpanel, treehouse website or my wordpress site to reach the ftp site for the purposes of this 'child' theme creation and activation. :) thanx
