How much should I charge for a wordpress template?

HI Guys, I'm new developing wordpress templates and I come across with a customer that want to buy a pro template and want me to give it a new look. No idea how much I can charge. He don't want to do extreme changes just adapt the best I can the look of his current site to the wordpress template.

Any clue guys? Thanks so much for your help.

I would first decide what you feel your time is worth. Just because somebody will do it cheaper shouldn't drive your price. Factors in deciding that would be the effort you put into learning the new skill. Think in terms of Amazon. You can build an online store just like them. However you cannot compete with their prices. You can compete on customer service and knowledge.

So if someone says they can get it cheaper somewhere else that's fine. But they can't get you somewhere else. It comes down to what you feel your time is worth. I'm sure you already have that number in your head. Any number below that is what creates the uneasy feeling.

Hi Matthew, Hmmm, Yeah but , unfortunately I don't have that number in my head :(. To give you and Idea for a design and development of an decent site (5 pages max) I charge U$D 800 as a start point.. Something that I will have it done in two days. Nice simple . Not crazy. Now with this wordpress template No sure if I have to charge him the same. Maybe I still charging what developers use to charge few years ago. I'm clueless and this guy need an answer.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, id you have any idea please share. :) And thanks for the idea for my new slogan LOL You can find cheap somewhere else...But wont get me somewhere else.. ( just kidding) I just like the line.

Why not just charge an hourly rate for this particular job?

If you are not used to working on different types of projects, or working / being paid for development work, then start at $xx price, and then go from there.

Hi Carolina.. let me ask you this.. how much that should be. Just to have an idea. The problem I see with that is that the customer will want to have an estimated amount of hours for the project and like I say before.. I'm new on this particular project and I don't have any idea how many hours will take me.. :(

Carlos that is for you to decide - I live in a different country, region, have different skills, overheads etc - so me telling you what to charge means nothing.

You have to just decide a figure, then go from there; if you find it isn't enough, you know to charge a little more next time - if it's too much the client will probably leave or will try to negotiate.

It's always a fine line but the range of prices people charge is $10 to $1000 - so no-one can tell you a price. You have to make that decision.

Ok thanks Carolina... Appreciate your input. Hopefully I'll get more suggestions. Anyways at the end I will have to make a decision. Have a nice one :)

You're in tricky waters. By not knowing how long it's going to take, do you 100% know how you're going to do it? I ask because I know how long something is going to take me to do so I can then work out a price, much like you do with your 5 page static sites.

Perhaps, you should let this one go by the wayside, or offer him an introductory rate just so you get some experience. Modifying themes requires a very good understanding of how WordPress works to do it quickly and effectively.

You'll HAVE to look at the theme before estimating any time quantities. Some themes look great but are the worst thing on the planet to work with as they've been written by complete morons.

Experience is what you need here, do this one for free or cheap...attribute it to learning so that next time you can say exactly what you need.

Thanks Matthew. Yes indeed I'm in tricky waters. Although I know how to swim I have to be very careful :)
you are right, I need to see the template he choose first. I will know that between today or tomorrow and Like you say I may have to go cheap. I may charge him $600 and take this project as a learning experience. Of course I always charge a little more and Partner up with any of you guys. Thanks a lot. and you have a nice day.

You could sub-contract Carlos Diaz. WordPress is what I do, ripping themes and plugins apart, making them do what I want and fit my themes I build from scratch. Can you give you my email or Skype and we can discuss further if it's of interest to you.

I can tell you how long something would take me and we can discuss further.

Sure more than Happy!! My email es atlantagdesign@gmail.com Don't remember at this moment my Skype I do not use a lot yet. :( But you can find me pretty much all the time on gmail messenger. Thanks and look forward to hear from you.
