How was the treehouse notifications function created? How could this be implemented in WordPress e.g. new items/posts?

I like the notification feature when I log back into Treehouse to see what's new. I'd like to implement this on a couple of client sites so when the users log back in, they can see what's new since they last logged in. The two clients sites I have in mind are built on WordPress. What functions or technologies are being used for the Treehouse notifications? What is being used to check for new content for each specific user?

Kevin, I didn't find any out of the box solutions, but I only did a quick search. I can think of serval ways to do this, but some of it depends on the exact functionality that you want and what is already available on the WP installations you are using. Can you get more specific with the exact user case and functionality you want?

Thanks for the reply. Broadly, I'd like the user to be notified if any new content has been added to a page or if there has been a new post added. For example, on the Page updates, I have a few pages that have images that can be download and marketing material that can be download. It would be nice to notify the user that new content has been added to those pages since their last login.

For posts, it would simply notify them if a new posts has been added since their last login.
