Issues with Permalinks and my local environment

I have issues with using permalinks on my local host I run a Mac OSx with the preinstalled php/apache config..

When I first activated permalinks - they would not work

I followed the wordpress codex on how to make permalinks work for localhost on mac and resolved the issue by creating a custom structure with index.php/%postname%

This works in that I can now access all of my links with the permalinks.

However, after Displaying Custom Posts and Fields in a Template I cannot reach the single-work.php page. This results in an error that there are too many redirects.

the page url that this happens on is: http://localhost/~steve%202/allisongrayce/index.php/work/sleepy-halls/

when I turn off permalinks and go back to the default structure - it works just fine. this is the url that works: http://localhost/~steve%202/allisongrayce/?work=sleepy-halls

Any advice on how to fix this?
