def squared(arg):
    try:
        arg=int(input("Please input your number: "))
    except ValueError:
        return arg*len(arg)

You are only creating the function & you need to check for int:

def squared(item): try: int(item) except: return item * len(item) else: return int(item) ** 2

many thanks for your answer, Cindy Lea :)

Cindy Lea is correct. I'm just going to repost her code so that it's readable and has correct indentation:

def squared(item):
    try: int(item)
    except:
        return item * len(item)
    else:
        return int(item) ** 2

thanks for making it clearer to be viewed, Jennifer Nordell!
