Moving from One Click WordPress to Using FileZila with a site already uploaded?

Hi,

This subject seems to be getting the better of me, everybody so far has been super help full but after hours clicking around and tracing my steps I finally realised I need to explain myself better so here goes.

On the "build a website with wordpress" track it walks you through the one click install first.

I followed along completing this and now have the site up and running,

I have modified the site to suit what I was intending to a certain point, Zac then was modifying code and using FTP that I had no idea about because of I had completed the one step install so what he had access to was different (i think).

I am wanting to move on to editing/ modifying themes and would like to continue using the current URL.

How on earth do I go about moving from the one click install to the 5 min download and using ftp without deleting the file or messing something up??

Sorry to be a nagg!

You can get FTP details through your Cpanel and will most likely find there

Ftp host name example - ftp.mysite.com

then a user name - something@mysite.com

then a password

And when you have FTP software downloaded you just enter those details from into FTP software. and then you should see on the left side your computer and the right side your hosting sites files and folders.

look inside public_html and your files will be there

Is it page content planning to edit or just making themes?

One option you can do is make an offline server and you can change everything about your whole working site from files and page content and view the results offline as if it was a real page and Wordpress set up except its just on your computer locally, you can do this by installing something called Mamp for the Mac or Wamp for Windows.

Hi Craig do you have your Wordpress site online? and on Hosting?

The One click install is to make the installation of Wordpress quick and manual install there is more fiddling about setting up a database and a user for that install which does have its benefits but one click takes away and does all that for you, if you are unsure about settings and what your doing or just want a quick install. Either way you will have same files to download in the end via FTP.

What is the current staus of the current site you have built? is it online? are you starting a new site from scratch?. Or are you building a new theme to the content / site you currently have.

I leave it there what i have type and make sure we don't get crossed wires lol

Hi Scott,

Yes the site is live currently, and I just edit the site from /wp-admin

Yes I think im aware of what you are meaning we used CPanel to complete the one click install?? I have the login details for that.

Im hoping to leave the site active as it has no real relevance at the moment is somebody was to come across it. Doing the courses im constantly changing random bits so its nice to view them live on the web from time to time.

Am i looking to download the files from CPanel ??

Thanks
