My code does not work and cannot figure out why.

Hello, could you help me please. My code is almost identical with the one that works properly but cannot figure out why it cannot get through.

My code:

import random
def random_item(argument):
    argument = "Treehouse"
    randomNumber = random.randint(0,len(argument)-1)
    return argument[randomNumber]

Code that works:

import random
def random_item(stuff):
    this = random.randint(0, len(stuff) - 1)
    return(stuff[this])
item.py
# EXAMPLE
# random_item("Treehouse")
# The randomly selected number is 4.
# The return value would be "h"

# Code does not work

import random
def random_item(argument):
    argument = "Treehouse"
    randomNumber = random.randint(0, len(argument) - 1)
    return(argument[randomNumber])

# Code that works

import random
def random_item(stuff):
    this = random.randint(0, len(stuff) - 1)
    return(stuff[this])

[MOD: added ``\python formatting -cf]

Your answer is very close. The code is overwriting the argument passed in through the argument parameter.

  • remove the line: argument = "Treehouse"
