My portfolio list item does link to index.html. why does it keep telling me that it isn't linking???

Hey Micheal,

The way you have this written your entire nav menu falls within a link to you index.html.

It should be written as:

<header>
        <nav>
        <ul>
            <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
            <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
            <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>

        </ul>
    </nav>
        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>

Thank you, I must have been on the crazy pills last night. I thought that anchor was closed above the nav. It's really obvious now after some rest >.<
