231,271 PointsThe "new" operator constructs a new object. It's not actually needed here, since calling Object() would return a new object anyway, but it's good practice. But it would make a difference if it were being used with a simple constructor function. For example:
function con(name) { this.name = name; }
x = con("Joe"); // no errors, but x is still undefined
x = new con("Joe"); // but now, x contains an object
