Plan of Action for Blog Redesign

I have an existing (self-hosted, WordPress) blog with over 200 posts. However, I would like to change up the theme, take away some posts (but keep most of them), and add additional posts to the same website... once I'm finished with the "Build a WordPress Theme" course here. I am planning for this to take about two months, so I don't want to just put up a splash page for the whole time I'm redoing it...

Any suggestions on what would be the best way to make this transition?

My biggest concerns are (1) making the changes "underneath" the existing (functioning) website, (2) keeping many articles on the site, with some tweaks, (3) keeping the remaining articles (so I can, most likely, move them to my other website). Thanks in advance for any input you can provide!

Oh, and I'm only a few videos into the "WordPress for Web Designers" course, so if this will be covered in a future video, my apologies.

One possible alternative is to get one of the themes below. You'll never have to redesign or buy another theme for the website ever again.

Premium Wordpress Themes with Full Support

On a side note, if you are wanting to do this yourself, you'll most likely want to work locally.

If you want to build a theme to use you should really just work locally and keep what you have or get a generic free theme to style your content til it's done.
