Problems using MAMP to make API calls to remote server

I have setup a local PHP dev environment using MAMP to create an apache/mysql environment on my local machine. For some reason I cannot send API requests to remote servers, it just doesn't seem to work.

Exactly the same code, bundled up and deployed on my web server works.

Anyone know what could be the issue, pulling my hair out.
