Project Management Software vs Whiteboard and Notepad

Is there any particular benefit of using project management software over simply a whiteboard and a notepad? When I look into downloading software for the most part I just see it as another potentially weak link in the chain.

Hi Paul.

You are perhaps thinking this in a wider aspect than I'm doing this.

I used to work via email and Evernote with my clients where I used Evernote for task lists and email for communication for the project. Been doing this for some years but I was never to happy about it. From time to time I lost overview of the project and not always was tasks from email added to current task lists in Evernote. I often realized that long time was spent in looking up old tasks in a long email thread.

Now I use Evernote for all notes and information about the project so I can easily come back to the client with support and Trello to hold all the tasks related to each project.

When I switched over to Trello as my project management app the work-life has changed completely. What I do is I create board for my client and invite him/her to join their Trello board with modification access. All project related tasks goes through Trello. Client can create and edit cards and from each card we can have a chat about that particular task.

I normally split the boards to four sections: Task list, Tasks on hold, Tasks in progress and Tasks completed. Then I drag them around sections to correspond the status of that task. I also sort them from top to bottom according to importance of the tasks.

So to answer your question: Yes, there is a huge benefit of using some sort of project management software :)

Hope this helps :)

Cheers, Steingrímur
