Redesigning website with WordPress. Domain, Hosting issues.

Hello,

I was assigned by our CEO to manage a project (site redesign). We decided to hire someone to redesign it. The web designer will be using WordPress. I just started the tutorial for WordPress so I am not that familiar yet on how it works.

Our existing website is being handled by an outsource IT. Nobody knows or have access to the control panel of the website except that person. I want to take over so that it is easier for me to edit the website.

We still want to use the domain name. What are the things I need to do in order to take control of everything?

Hope someone responds to my long story. ^_^

First of all gain access to the website control panel so you can backup you site's information. Secondly, you will need a hosting account to host your new website.

And finally, you will need a control over the domain name so you may redirect it to the new server... I would suggest you to watch this videos in order to get to know how to get around web hosting and domain management...

I need your advice. :)

How do I ask our outsource IT person to give me the full access and that I will have to take over the website without him having a bad reaction about it? That person has the full control of our IT system. Our CEO wants me to manage it. I should be careful of what I am saying before everything becomes complicated.

The e-commerce portion of our old website was developed by him. He insisted to use it and he told me to just give him the file and he will be the one to upload it. But, we never used that e-commerce and we don't have a plan using it. AND, we want full control. He won't give me what we need.

it is complicated, each case need special handling, it depends on many variables:

  • The contract between your company and the IT company
  • The IT person
  • The IT company work-code
  • etc...

Try telling him that your CEO has instructed you to become responsible for the website's maintenance... And if it still doesn't help, make your CEO act...

A new WordPress developer should be able to build out the Ecommerce functionality you need into WordPress.

BTW, be gentle, don't come and brutally murder this man's job, try to be kind to him and explain the situation...

Talk to him and i(want to) believe that he has a common sense..

Hahaha! That is why I am worried. I don't know how to tell him that. Actually, I've done this before even starting the project. I asked our CEO if he can tell that IT person to give me the access. He said to email him what I need and then he just forwarded it to the IT person. I really wished he said something that would tell the IT person that the company wants someone else to take over and that we need the full access for the website.

What happens next is, the IT guy called me and said that he spent a lot of time doing the e-commerce thing...The design is the easiest part.... and that we need to think or consider that fact.. And then he said that I should just give the file to him and he'll do the job. :C

But, as I told you, we won't use it anymore and that we want full access. :C
