Setting up WP to run on localhost

I'm having trouble getting the wp setup to connect to my local host. I followed the instruction on how to set up xampp on my p.c. It seems like it up. I'm able to connect to local host and select my files from the ht docs folder. I set up my wp_portfolio database. Wp still is giving me an connection error. Any ideas on how to fix?

I am currently running through these tutorials on my PC as well. I have got to the stage where it says I need to use MAMP, but MAMP was only mentioned in the instructions for a MAC. On the MAMP website it advises that MAMP for Windows is coming soon. I downloaded the MAMP that was available but my PC advised it did not know which programme to use to open it with. I have no idea. How did you over come this stage?
