Should I use custom templates or add to page.php?

Hello

I am creating my first WordPress custom theme for a client. Alot of the pages such as Contact Me and About Me have a one of custom layout and style.

Initially I was creating a custom template for each of these pages but after reading the WordPress site it says that custom templates should only be used if the template will be applied to multiple pages(which in this case they will not) and this instead needed to be added into the page.php file.

I was wondering if it would be possible to still keep these php files separated and add shortcut into the page.php to pull the content.

If someone could show an example on how to achieve this it would be greatly appreciated.
