Sub-domains in Wordpress? Good SEO? Bad SEO? Is Sub-domaining a site breaking it apart?

Hello, Im all-in wordpress right now, but Sub-domains in wordpress are still a mystery to me. (among other things)

I personally feel that websites Url are much elegant when sub-domains are use, for instance:

blog.mysite.com lifestyle.mysite.com

Is this that hard to accomplish that no one use it, or is simply bad SEO for the websites?

Even Wordpress.org itself uses it: make.wordpress.org learn.wordpress.org

But Im not hable to find any racional opinion (at least within the last 5 years) about it across the web..

If WP multisite is an option (indeed it is), well it's not very pratical is it? Any thoughts on the subject? Any lean easy way to accomplish this for tiny websites and blogs?

shop.myproduct.com read.mymagazine.com ...endless possibilities really,

Plus: /slashes/ are outdated and are ugly.

Thank you, Laurent

Laurent it is basically what you will put in a sub domain. If you are putting a part of a site to sub domain its a bad idea 'cause practically its a different web site so bad SEO and bad for integrity but if you are putting a different site which was connected to your main site but not in a context like blog or a side project it can be good but the catch you have to build two different web sites not one in a multi site (I can be wrong) as far as I know multi site plugins for different languages. So its up to your choice do you need a sub domain or not.

Hello Murat, thank you for taking the time to answer my inquire.

This doubt occurred to me in a more practical situation: Im planing a website for myself where I provide touristic knowledge about some places in my country. Not a huge site, but something to get me started.

At first I would have few cities to review on, but that is where my problem starts: Without using multiple sites, I would like to have City-1.domain.com/where-to-stay City-2.domain.com/where-to-stay, and I don't find a way of doing it..

hmm I think best way to go in this scenario go it like domain.com/city-1/where-to-stay this system will give you some good things and bad things. for good things you will get complete SEO and only one site to manage and other thing is easy navigate WP site without going other sites which will give benefit in ranking in SEO. actually only bad thing will come from this is look of URL other than that there is no bad side effect.

And here is a business tip build your site simple as possible make it user friendly and after you get good amount of visitors in a daily basis try to ask your governments tourism ministry to help you (I know this sounds crazy but it will help at least finding information about places and other information's like transportation, food culture of city, special days of city maybe you can get some money out of it too governments some grants in tourism advertisement this type of business systems called as business to government but again at start you are on your own). And don't forget to make your website mobile friendly it will be a big plus in sites like yours.

Have a good luck with project

Thanks Murat, your advices will be considered wisely. By the way, perhaps you could help me with one more thing: what planning structure would you recommend? I have two in mind: (now that i've killed the multisite one)

domain.pt/page/category domain.pt/city-1/where-to-stay A page per city? Or turn cities into main categories? I'm worried about category conflict, like one category being: where-to-stay, It cant be related to two cities at the same time can it? I could not use 'where-to-eat' to city-2 could I?

Thanks once more, you're being a real knowledge contributor!

hmm at this point I cant help you much `cause I never use wp as a site building system but from drupal side I know that you can create multiple catagories and asign pages for multiple catagories actually if this is what you need but have to say drupal is not easiest cms out ther. If you want to dive in some crazy ride you can jump in drupal have to say while you are working with it you will hate it but when you look finished structure( not the site) you will say it was hard but worth i. If you gonna work on drupal strongly suggest to watch yaworsk1 tutorials specially uber series he build a solid ecommerce site there but consepts can be used for any type of site.

But if you want to stay relatively easy system to build stay with wp and main catagory as city it will give you an oppurtunit to show more accurate information your user wants. But before start building it I suggest to build a test bench on your computer and try some altarnative builds try wp, drupal and jomla to see which serves you best. And before start any work on write a paper draw the connections of pages this will grant you really good catagory system at least in your mind after that look which cms serves you best and try to learn it first at the end this type of work saves lots of time and energy to spend on your site. Right now I`m not sure if any of this things make sense but you have good idea just plan your moves right and it will become product in no time.

Sorry for typos I write this from phone.
