The difference between a widget and a plugin

What's the difference between a widget and a plugin, in Wordpress? If there is a difference, then why are widgets and plugins both searchable in the Plugins page in the Wordpress admin area?

Widgets are the visual, user-facing part of a plugin or WP base code. When you install a widget in WordPress, you're likely installing a plugin. Some plugins aren't "widgetized", though, and do all their work behind the scenes (like Akismet, for example).
