Updating Custom Theme When New Version of WordPress Is Released?

Hello all,

I would like to start building a custom WordPress theme, but what happens when I update to a new version of WordPress? Will it break my theme?

Thanks for any feedback

It should not usually if your using good coding standards. However you should ALWAYS test somewhere besides the live site updating anything in wordpress. It does not matter if its plugins, theme updates, or core wordpress updates. Testing is crucial. Have backups too when stuff hits the fan. Been there, done that.
