Trying to create a Theme from scratch. Some say it can be challenging depending on what you want to do, but it can be more rewarding in the long run due to branding and context marketing, you know thing of that nature.

You will need to enter the proper code blocks into your markup for the functionality. If you aren't using the Treehouse videos take a look at the Wordpress Developer section on their website. But yes, you can use Notepad++ to work on this project, no problem.
