The 'printf'-method uses the placeholder '%s' when passing in strings as arguments. So if you write;

console.printf("First name: %s", firstName);

Then the '%s' will be replaced by the first String argument passed in (in this case, the 'firstName' variable) and the print will read: "First name: [WHATEVER YOU TYPED IN]".
