Im a little confused on why we are creating a variable of the index. Is this because we need to initialize the beginning of the loop at zero.

5,027 PointsThat's correct because while loop's condition depends on count-like variable. If var hasn't been declared it will raise undefined variable error of sort. This is common across many programming languages. Also, this is equivalent as first stage of for loop for (initialize; condition; change)
