Variable functions vs. regular string variables? How to tell the difference?

This is an interesting feature of PHP, but seems like you'd potentially run into some serious confusion when determining whether a variable is a function or a regular old string. They look the same, but if there's an existing function that takes the name of the string then it's a variable function. Is there some kind of PHP convention I'm missing or some other way to tell the difference between the two?
