what is render?

Why can he access to templates/index.html by using $app->render('index.html')?

I see the file is located in a different directory, so I was expecting him to write:

$app->render('templates/index.html').

Is this because he is using "render"? I still don't get the function of "render" even after reading some articles.

Can anyone help?
