When I edit my code in the connection.php file and save it, the change does not propagate in my local MAMP environment.

My code edits are not reflected in my MAMP local environment.

Try refreshing your cache by doing CTRL + F5. That was one of my problems back then -> changes weren't showing up in my local server. Hope that helps!
