When to use "nofollow" in anchor tags

I'm a bit confused about the "nofollow" in an anchor tag.

From what I understand, is that you should use it on links that send you to other people's pages, so that the search engine algorithm doesnt confuse this for a link that you might have paid for.

But a few videos past it was mentioned that links from other people's sites are also really important for your standing in the search engine results. Doesnt making those links "nofollow" make that part lose its value?

And if I had a sponsor for my website with a link to their site, wouldnt they want that that link helps them out in the rating?

There are 2 primary reasons to use no follow:

  • Paid links (You can have paid links, but you can't get an SEO boost from them)
  • User Content (To avoid comment spam and the like)
