When would code by necessary in Wordpress?

I know very little about Wordpress, but I do know that there are preset themes that you can fill in to make your own website. I also noticed that there were two Wordpress courses on Treehouse, one of which involves more extensive coding. When would you ever need to code when making a website on Wordpress? If I want to make an ecommerce website, would it be enough to take the shorter course with less code?

There are literally themes and plugins for everything. You could build a ecommerce site on wordpress and not even write code using WooCommerce

When you want to write code is when you want to build something custom. I always end up custom building any theme and writing the code myself, vs using a pre made theme. It kinda comes down to preference and what you want to do.
