while have post issue

I am pasting below the code which is in index.php file and have two post in wordpress. however they are showing error on website and not displaying it.

(Index.php)

<?php if ( have_posts() ) : while ( have_post()) : the_post(); ?>

<div class="container">                                                                     
<h2><?php the_title(); ?></h2>
<?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?>                                  
</div>

<?php endwhile; else:?>

I think it's a simple syntax error. The colon right after the "else." I think a space is needed there.
