Why are there not equal margins on all sides of the box?

If margin: auto calculates the same amount of space on all sides of the box, why is the box mostly at the top of the page and not more centred in the middle>

The "margin: auto" setting only applies to the left and right. There's no auto setting for the vertical dimension.

If you need vertical centering, "flexbox" would be a good choice.
