Why does the function statement of vanilla js doesn't work?

I know it may be a bit stupid, but why doesn't it works like this

.then(function(response) { this.setState({ gifs: response.data.data, loading: false }) })

But works like this?

.then(response => { this.setState({ gifs: response.data.data, loading: false }) })

The difference lays in the function syntax

I think the issue with the this in the function. Arrow function inherits this from it's scope, it doesn't have it's own this. So this.setState is going to break if you use the traditional function. This section of the MDN docs explains this concept in more detail.
