Can you build a website like ebay on wordpress. Where you can post items on and then people bid for them?.

Also in the future be able to upload their own items for other people to bid for?

Sure, I think you could do something like this. Items posted could be a custom post type. However, there would have to be a TON of customization to this. This is really bending WP out of what it's core is designed to do. You may be better finding a more eCommerce based CMS, possibly look at Magneto or Shopifly and see if they have themes or plugins that do this a little easier.

The problem is if you find WP plugins today that do this, your sites health relies on that plugin staying up to date. If the author stops supporting the plugin, it may not work with core WP anymore as the core gets updated and things become depreciated.

If you wrote your own custom plugin to add this functionality, I can't help but wonder if your time wouldn't be better spent building a CMS from scratch here. I like WP, I use it personally. I'm just not sure it's the right tool for the job here.

I agree Wordpress could probably do it but it could be done far better with a different tool or hand coded.
