Wordpress and PHP

I'm about to start learning wordpress and just wondered if it would be vastly beneficial to go through a PHP track first. What are people's thoughts?

It is very beneficial if you want to change the theme you're using or want to add some custom functionality to your CMS. A lot of functionality can be added through php. Decent knowledge of javascript can come in very handy.
