Wordpress Theme Editor

I am just curious if when editing the CSS of a Wordpress theme in the Appearance -> Theme Editor tab, if I should be creating a child theme to do this in. If I make any changes through this method, and update my theme, will be changes be gone?

Similarly, if I use a plugin to make CSS changes (like the Simple CSS plugin for example), will these changes also be overridden if I update my theme??

Any help would be great!

Yes you could do this in a child theme.

I'm not sure of the specifics of how to do this but search the codex which has a well documented page on setting up a child theme.
