Wordpress updates a danger to custom themes?

I am building a lot of custom Wordpress themes lately, and a variety of people warned me for Wordpress updates that could ruin your theme.

So is it true? If you make a custom Wordpress theme, will it stop working after a few patches? And if it is, what are good solutions to prevent that? Just keep editing the code? Because I don't want to have to look back to a website I created lets say a year ago.

By custom, you mean child themes? If that's the case, then a child theme is highly recommended, since it can be modified and the information will not be lost. For the child theme, you need to original theme, or the parent theme.

No, I mean themes build by myself.
